The Ultimate Kitchen Remodeling Timeline Guide

You were trying to put off doing a complete kitchen remodel, but the time has come to face the facts. You can’t use an appliance to cook if it’s gross and falling apart! You need and deserve cabinets that have doors on their hinges and a stove that heats your food evenly.

The problem is you don’t know how to get started with your remodel project or when to end it. We can help you out. Check out this kitchen remodeling timeline to see the complete list of steps that you’ll have to take.

Create Your Timeline: 1-2 Weeks

The first step of figuring out a typical kitchen remodeling timeline is to make it. You are in complete control over the pacing of the project.

Sit down and figure out a good date to start the remodel and map out all the steps that we’re about to go over to find out where you want to end things.

Set Your Budget: 1-2 Weeks

The worst thing ever would be to get your heart set on a bunch of improvements but not be able to do them because your budget doesn’t allow for it. That’s why you have to decide on how much money you’re willing to spend before choosing your remodel design.

Many people hire two different companies. A design team and a build team. The design team will tell you how much everything is going to cost and help you create your budget.

Once the budget is accounted for and a design is decided upon, the build team comes in and gets started with the project. The best part of hiring a design team is that they can give you a quote over the phone.

You can even email them pictures of your kitchen and get a ballpark price.

Do Your Research: As Long As Needed

The next step is to start calling around to different contractors or deciding if you need one. There are some projects that you can do yourself with the help of a short YouTube how-to video. Other aspects of a kitchen remodel are a bit more complicated.

If you’re going to be hiring a contractor, be sure to call a few of them. This way, you can get a feel for a bunch of different companies and compare price quotes. Take as long as you need to get through this process.

Choose Your Design: 4-8 Weeks

Once you’ve got a price quote that you can work with, it’s time to have the contractor come out to do a walkthrough of your kitchen. During this walkthrough, you’ll be able to talk about your kitchen design. They can even give you a few pointers that will help make the remodel meet your expectations.

That doesn’t mean you have to follow their advice. Decide on what you need. Are your countertops too narrow for you to really get your meal prep done?

Do you need to expand your kitchen around your growing family? Do you need new plumbing? Is the paint on your cabinets beginning to chip?

Once you’ve figured out what you need and don’t need, you can choose your overall design. You can go more modern with geometric patterns and metal accents or go with a more traditional Victorian look.

Getting Your Permits Out Of The Way: 2-4 Weeks

Something to keep in mind with your remodel is that it has to meet the standards of your local building codes. You’ll have to submit your blueprints and proposal to a committee. This committee will look over all your paperwork and either approve your project or deny it.

Getting your permits isn’t a short process because chances are, you’re not the only one trying to do a remodel. There are other people ahead of you.

Put In Your Orders: 4-16 Weeks

If you need basic kitchen cabinets and materials, the wait time won’t be too damaging. If you need anything custom made, however, you need to get on that ASAP.

Even small customizations can take up to four months or so to get back to you. That’s a long time to put your project on hold.

Demolition: 1 Week

Demolition will only take about a week. The construction company will come in and tear up your floors, remove your plumbing and wiring, and tear down your walls.

Still, there’s a little more to this process than ripping everything apart. The workers are going to be on the lookout for anything that might need to be fixed before the construction process begins.

Construction: It Varies

The time it takes for construction varies from project to project. If the contractors find anything questionable such as a broken foundation, they’ll have to fix that before they can start building new walls.

If you’re having anything painted, one coat will have to dry before they can apply a second one. A storm could blow through your area and cut the power. Anything can extend the timeline.
